Austin Neighborhoods Council Central Sector's next meeting is Tuesday morning, May 3rd.  APD Officer Dana Munguia, Central West District Representative, will join us for a jolt of java.

Bryker Woods Elementary Spring Fling - Sunday May 3, 4-7pm

Spring Fling is an annual family event sponsored by Bryker Woods Elementary School PTA--lots of fun children's activities inc. crafts tables, games, a "recycle city" (built by the kids with bunches of oversized cardboard boxes, stomped down and recycled at the end of the night). Music, healthy (& some not-so-healthy) food, lots of great silent auction items celebrating spring, and setting the mood for summer. Children of all ages are welcome. Families, individuals, students from other schools, grandparents, neighbors, friends, and all other citizens are invited!

WEST AUSTIN CRIME AND SAFETY SEMINAR

A Crime and Safety Seminar for the West Austin neighborhoods will be conducted by WANG on Wednesday night, April 22, 2009 (6:30 – 8:30 pm), at the O. Henry Middle School cafeteria, 2610 west 10th street.  The seminar will feature APD Chief of Police Art Acevedo as the special guest speaker, and will also include presentations by APD representatives concerning crime prevention, as well as information from a variety of local security companies and products for protecting your home.  The full agenda for the meeting is available at http://www.westaustinng.com

Lemonade Day is Sunday, May 3rd 2009

Lemonade Day is a free community-wide program designed to teach kids entrepreneurship through the power and simplicity of a lemonade stand. And everyone can be a part of it! 

Hey Austinites! -  many of you have set up lemonade stands – but here’s an opportunity you to be a part of the City’s first-ever Lemonade Day, help our youth learn some great business skills and get serious about earning some money! On May 3, children all over the city will set up lemonade stands – and you’re invited to participate.  If you want to have your own stand, it’s free – all you have to do is register at http://www.lemonadeday.org/. Each participant will receive a backpack full of information including an Entrepreneurs Guide that provides the tools you need for success! Join us for our BEST TASTING LEMONADE contest on April 26th at the Austin Children's Museum from 1-2pm.

Neighborhood Planning Meeting - April 21st

TOPIC: Continuation of land use discussions for West 34th and West 35th Streets

Please note, this meeting will start promptly at 6:30pm since we must end the meeting at 8:30pm.  

Summary of last meeting:

April 8, 2009—Land Use Workshop 20

LCRA Red Bud Facility                                                                            Attendance: 16

Discussion regarding how to use the land along the southern portion of West 35th Street from Jefferson to Mills avenue and 34th Street from Jefferson Street to Kerbey Lane took place.  Future land use decision for this portion of West 35th was postponed after stakeholders present at the meeting were not able to come to consensus on applying either Neighborhood Mixed Use or Neighborhood Commercial as the future land use for this area.  Some but not all future land use decisions were made for West 34th Street properties from Jefferson Street to Kerbey Lane.  Stakeholders discussed how best to allow opportunities for small scale retail in this area while also trying to protect the single family and school uses in close proximity.  Properties lining the north side of West 34th were designated as Office for future land use.  The remaining properties were discussed for Neighborhood Commercial, Neighborhood Mixed Use, or Office future land use categories.  However, decision for all other properties was postponed for further discussion. The parcel at the north-west corner of Jefferson and 34th was designated for Single Family future land use.

Austin Parks Long Range Plan for Land and Facilities

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) will meet with the community in April to review the draft document of the Parks and Recreation Long Range Plan for Land and Facilities (LRP). The document will be available, starting 04.01.09, to download for 30 days/month of April 2009.  <http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/longrangeplan.htm> 

The meetings will explain:

1.     How input was gathered for the LRP

2.     How input was implemented into LRP

3.     Display where input is located within LRP

4.     Open the floor for 3 minute citizen communication

PURPOSE: 

to update the 1998 Long Range Plan for Land and Facilities. The 2010 Plan reviews the goals and priorities established by the 1998 Plan and provides an assessment of the Department’s existing land, facilities and programs. 

GOAL: 

to provide a guide for future growth and development of Austin’s parks and recreation system. The Plan responds to citizens needs for parks, trails, programs, preservation of environmental and ecologically sensitive areas unique to the region, park standards, best management practices (bmp), land stewardship and national and Department standards. The Plan also provides recommendations based on demographic research, public input, service analysis, neighborhood plans, greenprinting and surveys.

AREA OF DISCUSSION: Properties on West 35th from Glenview to Mills Ave and properties on West 34th from Jefferson to Mills Ave (see attached zoning and Current Land Use reference for specific details).

This area has not been discussed for land use.  Please attend and be a part of the discussion and decisions that will be made.  Details regarding the land use options for consideration are described in the attachement to this email. Discussion regarding how to use the land along the southern portion of West 35th Street from Oakmont to the intersection of Jefferson Street and West 35th took place.  A majority of the stakeholders in attendance decided to apply the Neighborhood Commercial land use category to properties on this block up to but not including the property on the south west corner of the intersection of Jefferson and West 35th Street.  However, Staff cannot support a Neighborhood Commercial designation for all of these properties on the Future Land Use Map because of the residential uses that exist on a few parcels.  Alternatively, Staff recommends the Neighborhood Mixed Use designation for the properties that currently have a residential use on them.  It was understood by meeting attendees that both the neighborhood recommendation as well as a staff recommendation for these particular properties will move forward and be presented side by side in the plan.  The properties on the south west and south east corner of the Jefferson and West 25th intersection were decided for Commercial land use on the Future Land Use Map.
